Every year the Dana Foundation (@dana_fdn) coordinates the Brain Awareness Week, BAW – a week long global awareness campaign for everything related to the brain. Here at Real Scientists we decided to bring in 3 curators with different backgrounds and scopes for BAW, all 3 related to the brain and neuroscience.
First up we have Sophie Scott (@sophiescott), professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL in London, UK. Sophie studies the neurobiology of speech perception and the evolution of speech. She’s interested in how we understand all kinds of information from the voice, including emotion, and she’s also done a lot of work on laughter.
On Wednesday, Mo Costandi (@mocost) will take over – Mo started out as a molecular and developmental neurobiologist, and is nowadays a freelance science writer in Londin, UK. He’s promised us a “The brain 101”, an AMA-type couple of days, where you can ask him about the brain.
Our last BAW curator is Marina Piccottio (@MarinaP63). Marina is a professor in psychiatry and neuroscience at Yale University. Her lab studies the role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain, including research related to addiction, depression, learning and appetite. Marina is currently also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuroscience.
We’ll post the usual introductory posts for each of the curators where you can read more about them and their science:
- Sophie: Sunday March 12
- Mo: Wednesday March 15
- Marina: Friday March 17
We hope that you will enjoy interacting with our BAW-curators!
