Stop, accelerate and listen: thanks and farewell to our Accelerator Week curators

Cast your minds back to September when Real Scientists hosted 5 awesome curators for Accelerator Week. Kicking off with David Kelliher, then followed by Hywel Owen, Suzie Sheehy, Ciprian Plostinar and wrapping up with Robert Appleby, the week covered everything you never knew was fascinating about particle accelerators of all kinds. Plus some very cool pics of some very impressive kit

David, Rob and Ciprian kindly shared some reflections about curating for Accelerator Week.

David Kelliher @davidkelliher

In general terms, how did you find your week as a curator?

I enjoyed and also learned from the experience. I found that communicating even (or especially) a simple concept with clarity takes a lot of thought. It is great to know so many people are engaged by a tweet as simple as “We need to talk about particle accelerators”.

What other people or accounts should people follow if they enjoyed your tweets this week?

Accelerator people @stephenjbrooks @JohnJowett @boazhsan @ChihiroMacavity and institutes/labs @PartAccelBeams, @BrookhavenLab @isisneutronmuon and @cern. I also recommend the joint Fermilab/SLAC magazine @symmetrymag.

Rob Appleby @robappleby

In general terms, how did you find your week as a curator?

Fantastic fun, great response, nice questions

It can be a shock talking to so many. Did you find the sudden rush of interactions (good and bad) daunting?

For the first tweet. Then it was fun, and I felt welcome

In general terms, how did you find your week as a curator?

It was a bit scary at first, given that I’ve never tweeted to such a large audience and also I haven’t prepared at all, as this overlapped with a lot of other things at work and privately. But in the end, I actually enjoyed it.

I loved the responses, but it was hard to keep up with everyone. However, I soon realised that this is what people wanted. Interact with the curators, rather than just see some tweets.

Thanks once again to all of the accelerator week curators from all of us here at RealScientists HQ. If you missed anything, the tweets are all collated at the following link.
