Gene on me: thanks and farewell Jehannine Austin

To kick off the 2016 new year Real Scientists welcomed Jehannine Austin (@J9_Austin)Associate Professor at the Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Genetics, University of British Columbia. Jehannine specialises in the genetics of psychiatric disorders and is a trained genetic counsellor as well as an academic.

Jehannine covered some fascinating topics like the link between drug use and mental illness which, like most things in life, is *complicated*.

And reflected on the enjoyment she gets from supervising students and made us all wish that she was our boss

The major theme of the week was how very complex it is to tease out the tangled mishmash of genetics and experience when it comes to the manifestation of mental illness and Jehannine did a superb job of relating these complexities to us, and challenging our preconceptions. We asked Jehannine to complete our post-curation survey and her answers are below.

In general terms, how did you find your week as a curator?

It was busy, but really fun

It can be a shock talking to so many. Did you find the sudden rush of interactions (good and bad) daunting?

Yes, absolutely.

What were the highlights? Were there any lowlights?

Lowlights: I received a number of random messages from people who wanted to engage in political issues that were not relevant.
I received a couple of messages from people who it seemed wanted to vent/rant/generally express anger.

Highlights: Figuring out what people were interested in hearing about over the course of the week

Is there anything you wanted to get out of / do on the RS account that you didn’t manage to fit in?

Many things I wanted to do that I didn’t fit in….would have loved to have gotten into the CRISPR/gene editing stuff, which I didnt, for example…..

Did you have a plan? If so, did you stick to it?

Sort of….I had some topics in mind before I started and I sort of did most of those things, but I also responded to things as they came up…

Do you have any tips or advice for future RS curators?

Set up tweets in advance! 🙂

What other people or accounts should people follow if they enjoyed your tweets this week?

@laurahercher @geneticcouns
