The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth: thanks and farewell Marc Tennant

Dental academic Marc Tennant from the University of Western Australia took the wheel of RealScientists for the week of May 24-30. Marc shared with us his passion for dental public health, big data and NOT RINSING.

We also heard about Marc’s research on providing dental care to remote and marginalised communities in places like this

and also how we should SPIT NOT RINSE

We asked Marc to reflect on his time at RealScientists, so here he is in his own words.

In general terms, how did you find your week as a curator?

Good fun for sure!!! I was blown away by the level of interest. I have only been part of twitter for some 18months now and NEVER EVER thought there were people interested in dental health and fairness in the world.

It can be a shock talking to so many. Did you find the sudden rush of interactions (good and bad) daunting?

I was taken aback by the volume and speed of interactions. Frankly was not prepared for it! It made me really think about what I do for a normal day too. And made me acutely aware of my lack of work-life balance!

What were the highlights? Were there any lowlights?

SPIT-NOT-RINSE.

Yes, to get to the core essences of messages about complex issues we face and want others to learn from was the real highlight.

Is there anything you wanted to get out of / do on the RS account that you didn’t manage to fit in?

I think everything I had to share was there. I didn’t actually come with grand things or expectations. I am really simple at the core. Good health and care for others.

Did you have a plan? If so, did you stick to it?

I had no plan. I had some idea’s of each day but that was all. It was more interesting to follow the tide of interest and feedback to then insert bits of our learning journey to fit the tide.

Do you have any tips or advice for future RS curators?

Put a good deal of time away during the week. Its not something to do “inbetween” the real value is the interactions

Thank you Marc from all of us here at RSHQ for such wonderful insights into the world of a dental academic. If you missed anything, you can catch up on all of the tweets from his week at this link, and continue to follow him on twitter @MarcTennant. And don’t forget to SPIT NOT RINSE!
